ABSTRACT
Erythropoietin is used for the correction of post surgery anemia or when there is a considerable calculated hematopoyetic loss. Other positive effects have been also demonstrated regarding ischemia injuries. The study was made with 30 Wistar rats assigned at random to three different groups. In all groups a TRAM type musculocutaneous flap extended bilaterally with its inferior circulation. The flap was isolated from the top section with a plastic piece. A placebo was applied to the control group; Group I application was erythropoietin 50 UI/Kg and in group II 100 UI/Kg, immediately after surgery and every 3 days during 14 days. After research ended, removal of the flap was made, graded, photographed and sent to the pathology department for testing. Measurement of hematocrit was taken at the beginning and at the end. Flap measurements were made every day. It was found that group I suffered less ischemia than control group and group II (P‹0.0001) increasing the life of the flap in group I by 80% and in group II with 60%. There was no significant increase in the hematocrit levels in any of the three study groups.
