ABSTRACT
Objective: To measure quality of care indicators in the Intensive Care Unit.
Design: Observational and descriptive.
Setting: A private mexican Intensive Care Unit.
Patients: 600 adult patients.
Interventions: None.
Measurements and main results: Of the chosen quality indicators: stress ulcer prophylaxis, central venous catheter-associated bacteremia, urinary tract infections, accidental extubations and pneumothorax; were all below the suggested standard. Thromboembolism prophylaxis in patients with invasive mechanical ventilation and incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia were higher that the suggested index. For mortality analysis, there was an expected mortality of 22.51% against a real of 12.83% which means that fewer patients died from those predicted by the SAPS 3 model.
Conclusion: In this ICU, there is an adequate quality of care, according to the indicators used in this study. The importance of improvement projects in terms of thromboembolism prophylaxis in patients with invasive mechanical ventilation and incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia were reflected.
