Percentile benchmark for assessing the physical growth of children living in moderate altitude

ABSTRACT
Objective: The objective of this study was to propose reference percentiles for assessing the physical growth of children with moderate elevation of both sexes, based on body circumferences.
Methods: A total of 6,639 students between 6 to 12 years were selected in a probabilistic (stratified) 473 boys and 482 girls. The students were from urban public schools in the province of Arequipa, Peru. The variables were body mass (kg), height (m), relaxed arm circumference, chest and half calf (cm). Body circumferences were used to develop percentile distribution of p5, p10, p15, p25, p50, p75, p85, p90 and p95, depending on age and sex.
Results: We verified high levels of correlation between weight and height with the body circumferences of arm, chest and abdomen: In children (from 0.64 to 0.91) and girls (0.72-0.91). Percentiles established from body circumferences for the assessment of normal growth by age and gender. The values are summarized in five operational categories that could very well be utilized for the assessment of nutritional status.
Conclusion: The school of moderate altitude could use the reference curves developed from body circumferences in order to monitor and oversee the physical growth and nutritional status, serving as support to international standards using height and weight variables.
