ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the clinical and functional efficacy of triamcinolone acetonide
versus mometasone furoate in the treatment of non-allergic rhinopathy.
Patients and method: In a prospective study, done at a tertiary care center, 20 patients were included and assigned to one of two groups of 10 patients each. A clinical evaluation was done and analogue visual scale, the mini-RQLQ and the saccharin test were applied. Group A was given triamcinolone acetonide (220 µg/d) for 30 days, and group B received mometasone furoate (200 µg/d) also for 30 days. Functional clinical improvement, safety and efficacy of both treatments of non-allergic rhinopathy were assessed.
Results: There was an improvement demonstrated by the decreased scores on the analog visual scale and the mini-RQLQ. Mucociliary function was favored with 30 days of treatment with triamcinolone acetonide (p ‹ 0.05). In patients treated with mometasone furoate incidence of minor adverse reactions was higher.
Conclusions: In the treatment of allergic rhinopathy the effect of the triamcinolone acetonide is better than with mometasone furoate. Both drugs are safe.
