ABSTRACT
Background: The existence of anti-
Chlamydia antibodies in semen is related to autoimmunity and sperm agglutination, which affects sperm motility and, thus, decreases pregnancy possibilities.
Objective: To locate
Chlamydia trachomatis infection in endocervical cells and male urethral epithelium of couples with primary or secondary infertility.
Patients and method: Samples from endocervix and urethra of 62 couples with infertility were taken. The material obtained was fixed on methanol and refrigerated until its lecture. All samples were submitted to determination for
Chlamydia trachomatis with monoclonal antibodies marked with fluorescein and its latter detection by fluorescence microscopy.
Results: A positive result was found in 54 women (87%) and 57 men (91%). The number of couples in which both spouses were positive was of 51 (82%); in six couples only the man was positive and in three couples, only the woman was positive. Finally, in two couples a positive result was not found in either spouse.
Conclusions: Infections due to
Chlamydia trachomatis are prevalent in couples with infertility, finding 96.8% of positivity in the couples studied.
