ABSTRACT
Background: Bacterial meningitis is a global health problem and the province of Sancti Spiritus in Cuba is not exempt from this problem. Objective: To characterize the bacterial meningitis at Camilo Cienfuegos General Hospital during the years 2004- 2009. Methodology: A retrospective descriptive research was made during the period from January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2009 at Camilo Cienfuegos General Hospital in Sancti Spiritus. A study was made of 122 patients who corresponded to the total number of patients over 15 years of age discharged with a diagnosis of bacterial meningitis in this period. Results: Bacterial meningitis was predominant in males, in patients from 30 to 44 years of age. Otitis media was the most common risk factor. The most common symptoms were headache, vomiting and fever. The main laboratory findings were cytochemical CSF pleocytosis, positive Pandy's test and predominance of segmented neutrophils. Bacteriological confirmation was low and the most common pathogen was Streptococcus pneumoniae. The hospital mortality rate was 28.6%. Conclusions: Bacterial meningitis requires a comprehensive and specialized care, Streptococcus pneumoniae is the germ responsible for most cases, but the level of etiological confirmation by culture of cerebrospinal fluid was low and the disease lethality remains high.REFERENCES
