ABSTRACT
Objective. To evaluate certain social and alimentary factors associated to the nutritional state of two groups of preschool children living in Ciudad Juarez. Methods. The weight, height, BMI, waist circumference (WC) and supra iliac skin fold thickness (SIST) of children from the states of Veracruz (
Vera, n= 62) and Chihuahua (Chih, n=73) living in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua., were measured. The nutritional status was evaluated using the CDC growth standards and central obesity was defined at WC ≥ 90 percentile. Birth weight and some household socioalimentary factors were recorded.
Results. The prevalence for low weight, stunting, wasting and overweight/obesity was not different between
Vera and
Chih groups nor by sex, and neither in central adiposity (WC, SIST) indicators (p›0.11). Birth weight (3.2 kg) household monthly income (4.5 minimum wages, p›0.15), household food insecurity level (p= 0.78) and bottled and mixed lactation practices were similar between groups (p›0.08). The practice of exclusive breastfeeding was 3.3 times (p= 0.008) more common in
Vera than
Chih moms.
Conclusion. Under the same food access scenario, there are no differences on the prevalence of nutritional disorders in preschool children from migrant (Vera) or native (Chih) populations.
