ABSTRACT
Background: The incidence of schwannomas goes from 0.78 to 1.15 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The main symptoms include hearing impairment, tinnitus and vertigo. Its progression may cause neurological impairment due to mass effect and compression on brain stem and cranial nerves. Stereotactic LINAC radiosurgery is an alternative for the treatment of this type of neoplasias.
Objective: To demonstrate the efficacy of stereotactic LINAC radiosurgery in patients with vestibular schwannoma.
Method: Prospective comparative study of 35 patients treated with stereotactic LINAC radiosurgery. Volumetry and audiometry pre and post-radiation were done.
Results: 35 patients were studied, mainly women (65.7%), with more affection in the left hear (57.1%). The mean volumen of lesions diminish from 8.11 cm
3 to 8.05 cm
3, although without significance. Hearing capacity pre and post radiosurgery was not significantly affected (Wilcoxon T test of p = 0.05).
Conclusions: Stereotactic LINAC radiosurgery constitutes an alternative for patients with vestibular schwannomas according with this preliminary features. It is recomendable to give continuity to this lines of research in future poblational samples.
