ABSTRACT
Introduction: adolescent pregnancy can have adverse health consequences.
Objective: to reduce the incidence of pregnancy and its risks in adolescents.
Method: a study of educational intervention was carried out to modify the criteria on pregnancy and its risks for pregnant adolescents, who were assisted at the Polyclinic Arturo Ruiz de Villa Puig, Minas municipality, Camagüey, from January 2009 to January 2010. The sample consisted of 72 pregnant women. A simple random probability sampling was conducted. The final sample consisted of 32 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria. A questionnaire was created for this purpose, according to the literature reviewed; it became the parent record of information and it included variables such as: concept of adolescence, age of first sexual intercourse, knowledge of contraceptive of methods, reasons for continuing pregnancy, and fundamental complications in pregnant adolescents.
Results: 56. 2 % conceptually unknown teenage pregnancy. This situation improved significantly after applying the program, only 12.5 % persisted with this criterion, 31.2 % said that the first sexual intercourse must be at age 14 or at the first menstrual period. 59.3 % knew about IUDs as a contraceptive method, 68.7 % continued the hidden pregnancy due to fear of their parents, 31.2% identified as critical complication caesarean section and tear of the vaginal tract. After the program, 87.5 % said right answers.
Conclusions: positive changes were achieved in the knowledge of each of the topics covered.
