ABSTRACT
This paper raises the importance of considering a multi-factors that have been associated with rapid increase of the metabolic syndrome and its components. It is undeniable that the problem of the metabolic syndrome cannot be confined to the biomedical gaze. However, the contemporary trend has dominated explanations that emphasize individual and decontextualised subindividual the social and cultural world. With regard to obesity, the precursor of the metabolic syndrome, have developed various scenarios. It has been proposed on the one hand, the hypothesis known as the thrifty genotype, the other is the hypothesis of thrifty phenotype. However, genes do not operate independently, besides the human genome has changed little in recent decades. For the above-mentioned scenarios have been criticized by several authors who support that is the influence of “environment” a major factor in the genesis of these diseases. Obviously, it is necessary to build models to understand and study requires the participation of several disciplines in addition to genetics, the epidemiology, history, sociology, anthropology, psychology, politics and economics, among other.
