ABSTRACT
Introduction: Pain is a complex process, produced by diverse origin stimuli. It is classified based upon its etiology as nociceptive, neuropathic and psychogenic, and by duration as acute or chronic. With hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is possible to improve pain symptoms, by correcting most of the mechanisms responsible of its genesis.
Material and methods: 60 patients were evaluated (40 males and 20 females) aged between 7 to 78 years old, during a 10 month period. The evaluation was made using Visual Analog Pain Scale (VAPS), before and after treatment with HBO. The pressure during HBO therapy was between 1.5 and 2.0 absolute atmospheres, in an effective treatment time of 60 to 90 minutes.
Results: According VAPS previous HBO treatment 60% (36) of patients rated pain 7 to10, 20% (12) of patients 5 to 7, 15% (9) of patients 5 and 5% (3) below 5. After HBO treatment a significant (
p ‹ 0.001) reduction of pain was observed. According VAPS 75% (45) of patients rated 0 to 1, 20% (12) of patients rated 2 and 5% (3) reported no improvement in pain perception.
Conclusions: HBO therapy has been shown to induce analgesia, improving therefore significantly the quality of life of patients.
