ABSTRACT
Asthma is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world and there is an estimation that 300 million people live with it. In recent years, the incidence in children and adults has increased along with allergic rhinitis and eczema. The impact in the years of life lost because of incapacity is 15 million days per year, the equivalent of 1% of all the years lost for incapacity in all the world. In the year 2004, GINA (Global Initiative for Asthma), reported the greatest death incidence of 2 per 100,000 deaths in the world in the group from 5 to 34 years. In Mexico, the death rate was estimated in 0.5 cases per 100,000 deaths in the group from 5 to 34 years (general mortality), and 14.5 deaths per 100,000 cases of asthma. These data place us in the 8
th country with asthma death, while China occupies the first place with 36.7 deaths per 100,000 cases. ISAAC made a study to identify the prevalence of asthma symptoms, and Mexico was de 46
th country out of 56 participants in the study. The most affected groups were the younger children and the elderly. In the Instituto Nacional de Pediatria we found a total of 968 cases of asthma from 1992 to 2009, and 2 asthma deaths.
