Coordination exercise program in the elderly

ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the changes in elderly patients with an exercise and postural program.
Patients: Thirty-eight female and 12 male elderly patients with ( and SD) 74.8 ± 3.8 years of age who had suffered at least two falls in the last 12 months.
Measurements: Initial and final measurements of mobility arches (ROM), gate speed, step longitude, unipodal stance time, quadricep and brachial tricep isometric strength, and relation mistake/skill in a coordination test.
Results: Mobility arches of shoulders, hips, and knees were increased importantly (p = 0.05), dorsolumbaris mobility arches increased rotation but not significantly quadricep and tricep brachial isometric strength was increased 70% and 30%, respectively (p = 0.05), gate speed and cadence (steps per minute) changed from 102 to 118 and from 0.85 m. to 1.17 m, both with p = 0.0.5; step longitude changed from 0.46 m/s to 0.59 m/sec without significance.
An exercise and posture program to improve coordination in elderly patients is important to increase gate speed and unipodal stance time such as muscular strengthening, which means a low risk for falls in the elderly.
