ABSTRACT
Background: Monitoring and control of hospital infectionsrepresenttheapplication of theclassical concept of epidemiologicalsurveillance of communicablediseases at a hospital level, and involvesasystematic, active and prolongedobservation of thepresence and distribution of nosocomial infection. Objective: Assessingthebehavior of sensitivity of epidemiologicalsurveillancesystemsof nosocomial infection in Sancti Spiritus provincial hospitalsbetween 2008 and 2010. Methodology: A descriptivestudy in whichthepopulationwas 437 patientshospitalized at the time of prevalence and thesamplewas: 52 patientswith nosocomial infectionnotreportedbythesurveillancesystem. Results: Theoverallsensitivity of thesurveillancesystemwaslow. Thesurveillancesystem of the ProvincialPaediatric Hospital hadthehighestsensitivity. In general theability of surveillancesystemstodetect nosocomial infectionssuch as suture sepsis and generalized, urinary and respiratorysepsis washigher, in relationtothe time itistreated, thanothersites of infection. Therate of use of microbiologydidnotreachthegoal set bytheNationalProgramme, and therewasa prevalence of Gram negativegerms. Conclusions: Theoverallsensitivity of thesurveillance of nosocomial infections was considere dinadequate due to low levels of reporting.REFERENCES
