Morbility and mortality of emergency surgery for acute calculous cholecystitis

ABSTRACT

This study is a review of morbidity and mortality of patients subjected to emergency surgery due to acute calculous cholecystitis. We established percentage of positive clinical diagnosis and made an analysis of complications in these patients. One hundred eighty two patients were operated on during a period of 5 years in the Hospital Darío Fernández ISSSTE; 150 patients were female, 32 male, with an age range between 16 and 95 years. We noted two peaks of frequency, between 30 to 44 years and 65 to 69 years of age. Accuracy of clinical diagnosis was evaluated by chi square test (p < 0.001) and positive prognostic value of 86% with 8.9% false positive diagnosis. Complications arose in a total of 4.4% and mortality was 1.64%, both above rates reported elsewhere due to patient delay in seeking medical care and the poor setting of our hospital.
