ABSTRACT
Introduction: One of the oldest and useful operations in the armamentarium of surgical techniques for the general surgeon is inguinal hernia repair, with more than 10 different ways described for its correction. The aim of this study is to report the experience obtained with the employment of Lichtenstein technique in 510 consecutive inguinal hernia repairs at the Hospital General Dr. Manuel Gea González, Mexico City.
Material and methods: The outcomes of 510 Lichtenstein inguinal hernias repair 470 patient were prospectively analyzed during a period of time between January 1996 to January 2001. The variables analyzed with descriptive statistics were age, gender, type of hernia, morbility, mortality, recurrence, operative time, hospital stay, and long-term recurrence.
Results: We performed inguinal repair in 400 male and seventy female patients, average age 47 years, range, 16 to 89 years. Forty patients presented bilateral hernia; thus, we carried out 510 procedures, 440 primary hernias and 70 recurrent. There were 15 seromas (2.9%), four infections (0.7%), and five hematomas (0.9%), and three recurrences (0.5%). Operating time was 65 min for primary hernias and 80 min for recurrent, with 125 min for bilateral hernias. Hospital stay was 24 h.
Discussion: Lichtenstein technique for repairing inguinal hernia is a safe procedure and easily performed; with a low index of morbidity and recurrence, applicable to any kind of inguinal hernia, and a short hospital stay.
