ABSTRACT
Background: Cerebral vascular disease is the fourth leading cause of death in our country. The risk in patients with left ventricular hypertrophy is associated with a ratio of probability of up to 3.0.
Objective: To determine the frequency of left ventricular hypertrophy in patients with cerebrovascular disease, in a hospital of third level of ISSSTE.
Patients and method: We performed an observational, prospective, descriptive and transversal study in patients hospitalized for more than 72 hours with ischemic and hemorrhagic cerebral vascular disease diagnosis, with the left ventricular mass index determined by echocardiography of Troy. We registered antecedents of hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia, and body mass index to determine obesity, and associated them with cerebral vascular disease with left ventricular hypertrophy.
Results: We included 59 patients with age average of 70 years old, 66% of them were women, and 34% male. Left ventricular hypertrophy was found in 51% of the patients with CVD, of which 73% were women and 27% men, the median age was 63 years. The type of events found was ischemic in 74% and hemorrhagic in 26%. Left ventricular hypertrophy associated with other risks factors such as: hypertension (67%), diabetes mellitus (27%), obesity (30%) and dyslipidemia (50%).
Conclusions: Left ventricular hypertrophy occurs in one of every two patients with cerebral vascular disease, so it is important the prevention and control of cardiovascular risk factors to reduce the incidence of stroke with high rate of morbidity and mortality.
