ABSTRACT
Objective: To analyze the results of the tracheostomy performed with conventional technique at Hospital Central Norte, Pemex, and compared with data from the world literature to determine whether to continue with this mode or switch to another.Material and method: We made a retrospective, longitudinal, descriptive and observational study of patients admitted to different hospital services, who had indication for tracheostomy by the otolaryngology service, from January 29, 2001 to June 2, 2010.
Results: 178 procedures were performed of which we had access to the electronic clinical file of the Institution. In three of them we did not have any information about their postoperating evolution because they were non-institutional patients. Major complications observed were: severe bleeding in three cases (1.6%) and tracheal stenosis in three cases (1.6%). Minor complications were: minor bleeding in 10 patients (5.6%), infection of the stoma in 16 cases (8.9%) and mild subcutaneous emphysema in six patients (3.3%).
Conclusions: Surgical techniques of the conventional procedure and percutaneous tracheostomy are well established, but –based on the results– we consider that the conventional technique is still the safest.
