ABSTRACT
Background: Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death in Mexico. It’s a long process of evolution that begins in childhood. The first step in its pathophysiology is endothelial dysfunction.
Objectives: To obtain endothelial function values in Mexican children by means of flow-dependent vasodilation (FDV). To establish relationships between endothelial function and clinical conditions of Mexican children.
Material and Method: Endothelial function in the brachial artery by FDV with high resolution Doppler ultrasound, as well as anthropometric measurements and collected personal and family history of cardiovascular risk factors and eating patterns of 104 Mexican children were measured.
Results: Were 24 men and 80 women, mean age 8.48 ± 2.75 years, weight 32.6 ± 13.4 kg, height 1.29 ± 0.14 m, BMI 18.55 ± 3.9, 63.2 ± 11.2 cm waist, SBP 109.1 ± 12.6 mmHg, DBP 64.7 ± 9.7 mmHg. FDV of 14.47 ± 10.2%. Endothelial dysfunction (ED) was found in 29.8% of children studied, no difference in age, weight, height, BMI and BP among those with normal endothelial function and DE. There were more girls, history of diabetes and stroke in those with ED in whom the strongest associations were with a family history of premature cardiovascular events, obesity and smoking of their parents.
Conclusions: These are the first data generated of endothelial function in children in our country. Almost a third of the children studied have ED and a higher frequency of family history of risk factors and exposure to tobacco smoke. It is necessary to increase the number of cases to obtain a more representative sample of our children.
