ABSTRACT
Introduction. The applications of different techniques of nuclear medicine (positron emission tomography [PET] and single photon emission computed tomography [SPECT]) combined with radiological imaging methods, have helped provide a more comprehensive diagnosis of highly diverse conditions. Radiological images provide anatomical information while nuclear medicine images evaluate function and metabolism. New diagnostic alternatives and the development of increasingly sophisticated technologies require the formation of an interdisciplinary work group. Such is the case of nuclear medicine, where nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists, medical physicists, specialized technicians, and nursing personnel, among others, interact.
Purpose. The purpose of this project is to describe the functions and responsibilities of the nuclear medicine physician and the medical physicist in a nuclear medicine department, and to specify, from an academic standpoint, the necessary profile for professionals in each field.
Conclusions. The medical physicist in nuclear medicine must have postgraduate academic training and clinical experience in the field. Her functions are focused on improving the safety and quality of applied physics in medical practice. Observance of international standards in the operation of nuclear medicine departments and in training new specialists is a fundamental prerequisite to ensure the success of quality assurance programs.
