RESUMEN
El enfriamiento como parte del tratamiento de algunas afecciones es muy antiguo. El uso del frío extremo para el tratamiento de tumores de manera percutánea se practica desde hace dos décadas, tras el desarrollo de agujas de menor calibre que permitieron su colocación con menos riesgos.
La crioablación permite el tratamiento de tumores localizados en pulmón, mediastino, hueso, hígado, riñón, próstata y mama. Estos tratamientos pueden ser curativos o paliativos. La crioablación percutánea ofrece ventajas tales como: margen ablativo predecible y observable en tomografía computada, tratamiento prácticamente ambulatorio, efecto analgésico, desarrollo de respuesta inmunitaria. Se recomienda para pacientes ancianos o que por sus enfermedades impliquen altos riesgos si son sometidos a intervenciones quirúrgicas.
