Effect of sodium fluoride on antioxidant enzymes from human erythrocyte

ABSTRACT
Bakground: The excess in the consumption of fluoride can induced a condition called fluorosis that can show in human beings as problems in hematologycal systems. The objetive of the present is described the in vitro effect of sodium fluoride (NaF) on the specific activity of the principals antioxidant enzymes in the erythrocyte as an indicator of oxidative stress.
Methods: Human erythrocytes were incubated with NaF (10,25,50 or 100 ppm). The activity of enzymes superoxide dismutase, catalase and gluthation peroxidase were determined.
Results: The results shows that the erythrocytes incubated with growing quantity of NaF, present a decrease in the antioxidant enzymes.
Conclusions: Our results show that the NaF induced in vitro conditions, an oxidative stress to human erythrocytes. This it indicates a damage to these cell type.
