ABSTRACT
The advancement of health interventions, in particular that of surgical procedures, are a consequence of modifications of existing techniques and to the introduction of new procedures. This is surgical innovation and when practiced, it is research. It is thus important to get acquainted with the bioethical principles and local and international regulations on surgical innovation and research. For the performance of a modification on a standard technique or the introduction of a new one, an Institutional Review Board approval has to be obtained as well as an informed consent by the patient (or his guardians). Medical journals cannot publish papers on innovative surgery when authors fail to comply with these requisites.
