ABSTRACT
Introduction: Trauma remains the most common cause of death for all individuals between the ages of 1 and 44 years and is the third most common cause of death regardless of age. In this study we analyze determinant factors of morbidity and mortality in a series of patients with clinically relevant inadvertent injuries. Methods: This is a retrospective study (1999-2010) of patients coming from Maciel Hospital, Montevideo, Uruguay. Variables analyzed were age, sex, and mechanism of injury, topography, delay diagnosis, involved organ, complications and mortality. We performed a comparative analysis of blunt and penetrating trauma. Results: We identified 14 patients with inadvertent injuries, all male, mean age was 29 years, with a delay in diagnosis of 5.6 days for blunt trauma and 3.5 days for penetrating injuries. The most frequently involved organs were the duodenum, pancreas and colon. Longest delay was observed in diagnosis and mortality for blunt trauma, when using the Fisher exact test. Conclusions: This work shows that delay in diagnosis, high energy transfer trauma and inadequate surgical exploration are key factors for complications and mortality inadverted injuries.REFERENCES
