ABSTRACT
Background: The stroke it is a problem of world health, being the first cause of inability and second of dementia in adults.
Objective: To evaluate the utility predicts of the health stroke scale (NIH) in patients that enter to the service of internal medicine of the Hospital of Specialties of the UMAE 167.
Patients and methods: A cohort study was carried out in the 2005, including adults with radiological diagnosis of acute stroke with evolution smaller than 72 hrs. Variables: age, sex, radiological diagnosis, diabetes, outcome and prognosis according to NIH. Analysis: measures of central tendency and variance, method of Kaplan-Meier and regression of Cox.
Results: We included 55 patients, 30 men; median age 74.3+10.5 years. Good I predict in 45; being presented 28 deaths. Time outcome 177+20 days to good prognosis and 59+19 days to bad prognosis (p = 0.0027). The global appaisement of the NIH was significant (p = 0.003).
Conclusion: The results suggests that the NIH is not useful for the valuation it predicts of the patient with this population’s stroke, the obtained punctuation is higher than that of other countries and the average of age of presentation of the stroke is later (74 years). The mortality in the first 90 days is smaller and the time outcome still in those of bad prognosis, bigger.
