ABSTRACT
Background: The indicators and cutoff points for assessing adiposity (body mass index, waist-hip ratio, and waist circumference) as a component of metabolic syndrome (MS) have been derived from European population studies. Therefore, it is required to establish what adiposity indicators are associated with MS and its components in Mexican population.
Material and Methods: It was evaluated 50 men and 50 women aged 20 to 45 years. Adiposity indicators assessed were body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-hip ratio (WHR), conicity index (CI), stature-waist index (SWI), intra-abdominal adipose tissue (IAAT). The concentrations of glucose, insulin, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides were determined after fasting of 12 hours. The SM was determined by OMS and NCEP-ATPIII criteria. It was used the methodology of receiver operating curves to identify the best adiposity indicators.
Results: The prevalence of MS was about of 27%. The insulin resistance was the metabolic problem that was present in higher proportion (48%). The best adiposity indicators to identify MS according NCEP-ATPIII criteria were SWI, WC, BMI and WHR. Meanwhile BMI, SWI, WC and IAAT had a moderate accuracy to evaluate MS according to OMS criteria.
Conclusion: The BMI, WC and SWI appear to be appropriate indicators to evaluate MS in young adults population of Mexico. The WHR is no recommendable to evaluate these metabolic alterations.
