ABSTRACT
The objective is to describe the anatomical distribution, evaluation and characterization by image of the gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST): uncommon mesenchymal tumors originate from the interstitial cells of Cajal, present in the digestive tract and considered potentially malignant. The GIST (benign or malignant) can be submucous, subserous or intraluminal. Small tumors are homogeneous and well-defined while big tumors tend to be heterogeneous and not defined, in addition to having calcifications or necrosis. GIST play a neuromotor role in the bowel function and are characterized by its expression C-KIT (a immunohistochemical marker), this difference GIST from not GIST. The gastrointestinal stromal tumors represent the first type of solid tumor very sensitive to a specific molecular target in their treatment, as is a blocker of tyrosine kinase receptors (for example imatinib). When GITS are located in the retroperitoneum should be differentiated from malignant fibrous histiocytoma, leiomyosarcoma, fibrosarcoma and liposarcoma.
We present 4 patients with GIST: two with location in the stomach (more frequent site) one in the duodenum with affectation to the pancreas and another located in the retroperito neum, with recurrence after surgery.
