ABSTRACT
Blood banks play an important role as epidemiological sensors to carry out serological tests for infectious agents. Notification of these serum markers positivity must to be done both to the health authority and the blood donors involved. This last point is addressed in this article, in particular reflecting the experience of the epidemiological surveillance program established in the Banco Central de Sangre, Centro Médico Nacional «La Raza», with particular emphasis in regard to hepatitis B and C viruses, human immunodeficiency virus, syphilis and Chagas disease.
