ABSTRACT
Background: in almost 30 years of HIV’s pandemic there have been substantial changes in the diagnosis and treatment of the infected children. From 1997 in Uruguay it was begun by the HAART.
Objective: to analyze in prospective form the children’s infected with HIV hospitalizations and to compare with previous study Material and methods: in the period included between May 01, 2006 and April 30, 2008 there was analyzed the hospitalization of the children infected with HIV in the CHPR. Information was gathered: age, sex, weight, height, reason of the hospitalization, level of CD4, treatment, immunizations, days of hospitalization, need of intensive care, discharge or death.
Results: there were included 42 children, who had in whole 72 hospitalizations. The median of days of hospitalization was of 6 and the median of age to the admission was 5 years. 58% was well nourished and the most important cause of hospitalization was respiratory infections; 68% was immunocompetent, 53% was receiving HAART; 7 children needed intensive care. With regard to the previous study it increased the median age to the admission, diminished the percentage with chronic malnutrition, increased the number of children with normal CD4 and no patient died.
Conclusion: in the comparison of both studies a decrease of the hospitalization has been obvious in children with one year old or less, having changed the middle ages of hospitalization from 14 months to 5 years. The patients diminished with immunosupression and also those who were presenting chronic malnutrition. The levels of immunization must be improved
