ABSTRACT
A retrospective, descriptive and observational study was performed during 5 years, from 1994 to 1999, with 40 patients who had entered the Emergency Service. The patients were over 80 years old, 32 females and 8 males. Demographic variables were obtained, as well as personal, pharmacological and psychiatric background. Pelvis ApRx in neutral position, Ap and lateral study of the affected hip, cortical morphological index, Sing index and type of fracture were evaluated. Tronzo and Pawells classifications were employed, according to the topographical type. Twenty-seven hemiarthroplasties were implanted, among them, 6 presenting transtrochanter fracture and 12 with osteosyntesis. During their stay in hospital, 24 patients showed psychiatric alterations, 14 of them with acute brain organic syndrome within 21 days, and 5 of them died due to added complications. They were treated along with other Services. We may conclude that the acute brain organic syndrome or senile insanity had mainly been caused by the surgical trauma, cardiovascular alterations and infections, increasing morbidity and mortality. It was also observed that people most frequently fall down at home and they generally take a little care of some drugs ingestion.
