ABSTRACT
Despite the huge technological advances and the development of new parameters in hematology, the blood smear remains as the “queen of assays” in the hematological diagnosis. For various reasons, out of the scope of this module, and to the misuse of technology, many laboratories have underestimated the values of the blood smear and as a result they hand the raw hematology results, as they come printed from the automatic analyzers, without an analysis of the blood smear, not even in the instances where the instrument alarm requires it, according to the good laboratory practices. In order to have an optimal analysis of the blood smear, threeconditions must be met: (1) an optimal blood smear, (2) optimal staining and (3) the smear being analyzed by competent personal.
