ABSTRACT
The usage of an optical fibre laryngoscope Airtraq was compared with an intubating laryngeal mask C-trach, both equipments have an optical fibre and a screen to observe the epiglottis and vocal cords where the endotracheal tube is going to be introduced in order to determinate which one of both methods is more effective for intubating. After de anaesthetic induction 80 patients were divided hazardously in two groups. In group A they were intubated with a laryngeal mask for C-trach intubation and in group B with a laryngoscopical Airtraq; both groups were intubated with a direct sight of the epiglottis and the vocal cords through an optical fibre and screen for direct observation; this procedure was followed by a sequence of maneuvers that were used after detecting a failed intubation. The number of maneuvers used and the time transcurred were registered in both groups. The intubations were successful in all patients, but the mean time of intubation was longer in group A than in group B (38.3 ± 10.4
vs 26.4 ± 9.1 s. P ‹ 0.001); the number of patients that needed one or more maneuvers of intubation were significantly higher in group A than in group B (76
vs 42% P = 0.001).In conclusion, both methods are useful for endotracheal intubation, but Airtraq makes intubation faster and with less maneuvers.
