ABSTRACT
Objective: To find out about the use of the microdebrider, in endoscopic nose and sinus surgery, on a group of otolaryngologists.
Participants and method: A questionnaire consisting of five questions was applied to 82 specialists and 21 ENT residents who attended a course of endoscopic surgery of the nose and the sinus in Mexico City.
Results: The microdebrider is frequently used by the specialists (95% of them) and hardly ever by the residents in training. It is used mainly in the first passages of the functional endoscopic surgery and its use diminishes when advancing (anterior to posterior technique) the dissection and in inflammatory pathologies although it has been extended its use to neoplasic and obstructive pathology. Only 17% (14 specialists) reported to have received formal training for the use of this tool.
Conclusions: Microdebrider is frequently used by specialists for nose and paranasal sinuses endoscopic surgery.
