ABSTRACT
Background: The diseases of the mammary gland in pediatric patients are infrequent. Most injuries occur in adolescence and are benign tumors: fibroadenoma in women and gynecomastia in men.
Objective: To report how often this type of injuries occurred in three children’s hospitals providing tertiary care in Mexico City.
Material and method: It is a descriptive study. From the archives of pathology services, at three pediatric hospitals providing tertiary care, cases from 2005 to 2009 with the topographic diagnosis of breast pathology were selected, of both sexes and from 0-18 years old. The analysis of the results is descriptive.
Results. The total number of cases found in the five-year period at the three hospitals is 154, accounting for 0.4% of the total biopsies received in the same period. 31.1% were men. The age ranged from 4 to 18 years, with a media of 14 years. With the exception of a secondary lymphohematopoietic malignancy, all, except one published in this number also, were benign tumors. Fibroadenomas were 40.9% and 31.1% were cases of gynecomastia. There were 16 adenomas and 8 cases of polymastia.
Conclusions: In this series, in the same way as regards the literature, breast lesions in children are no frequents, constitute only 0.4% of all biopsies received over a period of five years. Most of them occur in women and all, except one, were benign tumors. The clinical dataof the requisition form, relating to the cases, are insufficient to explain some findings. It is important to make a more careful clinical review of cases of gynecomastia in order to identify pathological cases.
