ABSTRACT
Objective: Literature review of the current techniques of Hysteroscopy as the best ambulatory tool for recovery of transmigrated foreign bodies in users of Intrauterine Devices (IUDs).
Method: We browsed electronic databases from 1970 to 2008 using the search terms “hysteroscopy”, “intrauterine device, with the related articles we made a bibliographic review.
Results: Several authors report the benefits of hysteroscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of intrauterine foreign bodies in IUD users, results showed that hysteroscopy provides a cheaper and easier method for this purpose. Lost or migrated Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) cause frequent problems due to the popularity of the contraceptive method. The importance of timely diagnosis lies in the fact of its possible consequences such as unplanned pregnancy, genital bleeding and damage to adjacent organs. With appropriate evaluation is possible to identify the IUD and offer to the patient the best strategy of treatment with office hysteroscopy.
Conclusions: Hysteroscopy is proposed as a useful and effective procedure in diagnosis and treatment of lost IUD.
