Conflicts in Training a Group of Mexican Family Medicine Residents: A Qualitative Approach

ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify the conflicts that
third-year medical residents face during training at Family Medicine Centers in Mexico City.
Design: A qualitative interpretive study.
Material and Methods: The study was carried out from November 2005 to November 2006. Qualitative intervention with the open-ended unique question technique as follows: Which was the most difficult circumstance that you encountered during your 3 years of medical training? This question as applied to 80 residents.
Results: Eight categories were identified, including
disease and accidents, family problems, difficulties in household organization, long work shifts, , economic aspects, and pregnancy-related obstacles.
Conclusions: The main causes of conflicts comprised assistant and administrative overload and long work shifts, which exerted a negative influence on the residents’ quality of life and health.
