ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the influence of Erectile dysfunction (ED) on the marital subsystem functionality of the patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Design: Observational, analytical, and cross-sectional study. Material and Methods: This study was carried out from June to October, 2005. It included 219 males aged 30–88 years, with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus of › 5 years of evolution. We applied the International Index of Erectile Dysfunction (IIED-5) questionnaire and according to the score obtained, these study participants were classified as without and with erectile dysfunction (slight, moderate, and severe). For valuation of conjugal subsystem operation functionality, we employed the Conjugal Subsystem evaluation instrument proposed by Chavez-Aguilar. For the statistical analysis the test of We utilized the Kruskal-Wallis and the Mann-Whitney U tests for statistical analysis. Results: Among the 219 patients studied, there was a general ED prevalence of 86.3%, with a greater incidence of slight ED (35.6%). When comparing differences among the groups with and without ED based on conjugal operation functionality, we observed a higher frequency in patients with ED, and moderate conjugal dysfunction prevalence in both groups (p = 0.005). Conclusions: This study demonstrates the association that exists between degree of ED and conjugal subsystem dysfunction. We found that the greater the degree of ED, the greater affectation of any area of conjugal functionality.REFERENCES
