ABSTRACT
Objective. To determine bacterial colonization and the antimicrobial susceptibility of
Pseudomonas aeruginosa in isolates obtained from burnt infected patients attended in a High Specialty Regional Hospital.
Materials and method. Bacterial isolates were obtained from hospitalized patients in the burnt unit in the period January - April 2008. There were included 35 patients. Samples were inoculated in blood agar, salt and manitol agar, Mac Conkey agar and Biggy agar. Bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility were obtained in Sensititre Microscan. 43 vPseudomonas aeruginosa isolates were tested to 13 antibiotics.
Results. In the group of study, 37.1% had bacterial infection; 11.4% died for infection in its thermal lesion. Among
Pseudomonas spp the predominant specie was P. aeruginosa (97.2%). There were polymicrobial isolates that included
Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, Enterobacteria. P. aeruginosa isolates had a high resistance to ticarcillin (98%) and chloramphenicol (95%), and with a low resistance to imipenem (26%) and meropenem (56%).
Conclusion. P. aeruginosa is the main bacterial agent identified in patient with burns. Isolates had a high antimicrobial resistance profile.
