ABSTRACT
Several species of mammals produce lactoferrin, a nonheme iron-binding glycoprotein belonging to the transferrin family. Lactoferrin is distributed in a variety of exocrine fluids and it is particularly abundant in milk and colostrum. Lactoferrin is an essential component of innate mechanisms of host defense o account of displaying several antibacterial activities and by its strategic presence in secretions spread over mucosal surfaces which are frequently exposed to the contact to pathogenic bacteria. Basic research about the antibacterial activities of lactoferrin has influenced on clinical studies related to prophylactic strategies to prevent infectious diseases as well as on the design of therapeutic methods for the treatment of diseases caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria.
