ABSTRACT
With the purpose of finding the frequency of parasitic infections associated to eosinophilia we estudied 51 children at the Bloque Materno Infantil of Hospital Escuela (HE) from April to September 1998. The children were selected if showing eosinophilia greater than 10% or an absolute value greater than 850 cells/µL. The evaluation included clinical history, physical examination and coproparasitologic examination with direct exam of feces, eggs count and Baermann. The median age was eight years old, with most patients (51%) residents of rural areas. Children older than four years of age represented more the 80% of all moderate and severe eosinophilia cases. In 45% (23 children) we identified at least, a geohelminth known for causing eosinophilia and in the rest, a neoplasic or allergic problem, (5.8% each) or no apparent cause (43.1%) were recognized.
Ascaris lumbricoides and
Strongyloides stercoralis were the parasites identified more frequently. Although statistically no significant, we observed a tendency of greater eosinophilia related to greater intensity of infection. These results indicate that eggs count and the Baermann technique are useful tools to study the eosinophilic patient in the HE.
