ABSTRACT
Brain sarcomas are very rare tumors which correspond to the ‹ 1% of primary tumors and 5-15% of the head and neck tumors.
Objective: access the prevalence of brain sarcomas in a single institution.
Material and methods: In the neuropathology department, we checked the brain sarcomas of 16 years, between 1990 and 2006. Files were checked and the slides were H&E stained. The clinical-pathological findings were correlated.
Results: we studied 35 cases of patients histopathologically diagnosed as brain sarcomas, from which 32 (91.4%) were primary from the nervous system and 3 were metastatic (8.6%). The age was from 16 to 83 years (45.9), 16 cases were women (45.7%) and 19, men (54.3%). Due to the histological type they were: fibrosarcoma 11 (31.4%), reticulo-sarcoma were 5 (14.3%) meningosarcoma were 4 (11.4%) osteosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma and rhabdomyosarcoma were 3(8.6%), chondrosarcoma and lyposarcoma were 2 (5.7%), Edwing tumor and malignant shwannoma were 1 (2.9%). Relapses were present in 22 cases (62.9%), radiotherapy was given to 24 (68.6%) and chemotherapy to 11 (31.4%). The final evolution of the patients was: with clinical improvement in 17 cases (48.6%), no improvement in 9 (25.7%) and worsening in 9 (25.7%) and 6 (17.1%) had metastasis. There was no relation between total Exerésis and relapse (p=0.631), or with the final evolution of patients.
Conclusion: In general, sarcomas have no predilection for .pender and present an age distribution depending on the histological type, however, there are characteristic tumors for certain ages. Because of its location, most of them are supratentorial.
