ABSTRACT
This review article present an overview of the relationship of the potassium channels and neuronal excitability. Available data coming from the International Union of Pharmacology was review and a summary was constructed as a table showing the name, nomenclature, physiological function, central nervous system distribution, current associated and physiopathology. Also some fundamental aspects about excitability are mentioned and related with the functionality of potassium channels to the basic mechanisms of neuronal activity. We conclude that a better knowledge about how potassium channels regulate neuronal firing could lead to better understanding the disorders of membrane channels or channelopathies.
