ABSTRACT
The history of medical services of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) in Nayarit State began in Tepic, the State capital in 1958. At the beginning, medical care was rented out, and a wing of Hospital Central (Central Hospital) of the Secretaría de Salubridad y Asistencia (Secretary of Public Health and Assistance) was occupied. Later, in 1966, the IMSS built in Tepic its own hospital-clinic with 31 beds. In 1972, medical care was extended to rural areas; small out-patient clinics and hospitals were founded in different parts of Nayarit. The hospital-clinic continued in operation for over 10 years. It finally was incorporated into another general hospital with 168 beds. In the next two decades, expansion to rural and marginal areas continued, and health services were identified with the Programa IMSS-Solidaridad (IMSS-Solidarity Program), financed with federal funds and administered by the IMSS.REFERENCES
