ABSTRACT
Background: The HIV associated cognitive disorders cause combined acquired cognitive deficit abilities that might include motor function, behavior and cognition, that contribute to the rising of HIV infection’s morbidity and it represents an important risk factor of mortality.
Materials and methods: Prospective Survey realized in the General Hospital 11 from the Mexican Institute of Social Security with population conformed by all the outpatient with HIV/AIDS diagnosis. Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE) was used to identify neurological alterations founded in this particular cohort.
Results: 119 patients were interviewed of which 91 were male and 28 female. The average age calculated in year at time of the study’s realization was 39.21 ± 10.3 and the time of treatment calculated in months was 63.63 ± 38.89. The study shows that 66% of the surveyed patients had a normal cognition capacity, in 22% of the cases presented a suspicion of pathology and 11% had cognition disorders. It wan not reported any dementia case.
Conclusions: In base to MMSE, 66% of our population had a normal cognition capacity; the rest of them had suspicion of pathology or cognition disorders.
