ABSTRACT
Background: Medical Intensive Care costs of main pathologies treated in Mexico are unknown.
Objectives: To define the medical intensive care costs of main pathologies in Mexico since the providers’ perspective.
Patient and methods: Design: Prospective, multicenter cost analysis study. Sites: 6 Mexican ICU’s Mexican Institute of Social Security. Period: 1 year. Patients: 16 years or older. Variables: Demographic, clinical, APACHE II, Brussels score and NEMS. Pharmacoeconomic method: Cost analysis cost from the providers’ perspective with bottom-up approach. Sponsorship: CONACyT. Statistical analysis: descriptive statistics.
Results: 2,463 patients were enrolled, 50.2% women. Mean age was 53.7 ± 18.5 years. ICU and hospital length of stay were 6.4 ± 5.0 days and 19.1 ± 16.7 days, respectively. Main diagnoses were sepsis 449 (18.2%), coronary artery disease 432 (17.5%) and diabetic ketoacidosis 151 (6.1%). Total costs in the ICU per patient were 203,303 ± 199,192, 123,430 ± 164,497 and 149,253 ± 143,503, respectively.
Conclusions: Sepsis is the most expensive pathology, followed by diabetic ketoacidosis. The most expensive items were day-bed, drugs, surgery and dialysis.
