ABSTRACT
Background: It is important to identify a condition that may otherwise be exposed to trauma or surgical risk.
Objective: To determine the incidence of high jugular of the Gulf and the possibility of pathology associated with this anatomic variation in tomographic studies.
Material and methods: 500 mastoid were evaluated by high-resolution CT of the jugular gulf high during a period of five years (1999-2004) and analyzed the associated disease. We cut axial and coronal CT scan of mastoid with high resolution, with a thickness of 1.5 mm and cutting table feed of 1 mm.
Results: 56% of the gulfs of the high jugular was associated with chronic otitis media and 20% was not found associated disease, 12% and 12% otomastoiditis associated with various pathologies.
Conclusion: Although the Gulf of high jugular is an anatomical variant, is often associated with pathology and has a close relationship with ear injuries.
