ABSTRACT
The inflammatory response is an essential, self-limited and highly regulated process for pathogens elimination. A defective regulation of the inflammatory response leads to the development of pathological conditions such as autoimmunity and chronic inflammation, while a lack of an inflammatory response allows the progression of microbial infections or tumor development. Galectin-1 is an endogenous protein of the lectins family that regulates immune homeostasis through its specific binding to glycosylated structures on the cell surface of immature and activated T cells, resulting in induction of cell death by apoptosis. Recent evidences indicate that treatment with galectin-1 skews the balance from a TH
1- toward a TH
2-polarized immune response in different experimental models of autoimmunity, chronic inflammation and cancer. These findings draw attention to the anti-inflammatory function of galectin-1 and its potential use as an anti-inflammatory agent for the treatment of autoimmune diseases, graft rejection, chronic inflammation and recurrent fetal loss. This review summarizes the current knowledge about galectin-1 expression and function on T cell homeostasis, and its role in experimental models of inflammation-mediated disorders.
