ABSTRACT
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and the recuperation time of the radiofrequency to treat of primary varicose veins in the legs.
Material and methods: From November of 2006 to July of 2009, 108 legs in 54 patients with symptomatic primary varicose veins were treated by radiofrequency, 39 were females and 15 males, the averaged aged was 42 years old. In the preoperative each patient had a duplex ultrasound to evaluated the permeability, competency of the profound venous system, the localization of the reflux areas and the diameter of the saphenous veins. In the postoperative a duplex was done at 72 hours and 6 and 12 months.
Results: They are reported according the recommendations of The American Venous Forum and The Society of Interventional Radiology. At six months the radiofrequency was effective in the 98% of the patients, in one case (1.85%) there was complete recanalization of the saphenous vein. This technique was safety and with less recovery time.
Conclusions: The radiofrequency is in the median term a safety and effective therapeutic alternative to treat primary variceal disease in the legs.
