ABSTRACT
Introduction. The respiratory complex has been identified as the main syndrome in pigs. It is associated with weight gain, food conversion and mortality losses. The objectives of the present study were: a) to determine the prevalence of pulmonary lesions in pigs from the slaughterhouse of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, b) anatomopathological characterization of pulmonary lesions, and c) to determine the degree of pulmonary lesions.
Material and methods. Macroscopic inspection of pig lungs in the slaughterhouse of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico was carried out in order to identify types and degree of lesions.
Results. The prevalence of pulmonary lesions was 90.3% (11,895 lungs). From this pulmonary lesions, pleuropneumonia was present in 37.1% (4,418 lungs), broncopneumonia in 28.9% (3,433 lungs), pneumonia in 28.0% (3,329 lungs) and pleuritis in 6.0% (715 lungs). The 56.5% (304) lungs had a degree lesion of 10% and 43.5% (234) lungs 10%. 43.5% of the inspected lungs had more than 10% pulmonary lesion.
Discussion. The type and degree of pulmonary lesions in pigs could be due to factors such as the production system, biosecurity, nutrition, environment and environmental microrganisms. The high prevalence shows the importance of the respiratory complex in the state of Yucatan. The type of pulmonary lesions suggest that some microorganism are involved in the respiratory complex.
