ABSTRACT
Gingivitis and periodontitis are chronic inflammatory oral diseases that, through the continuous production and systematic release of inflammatory chemical mediators, may present certain influence over pregnancy the conditions associated to it, such as births that do not reach their term, eclampsia, pre-eclampsia, diabetes, and gestational diabetes. These disorders can put at risk mother’s health and her product. This article presents a review on the physiopathological mechanisms that seem to associate oral conditions at pregnancy with complications in uni- or bidirectional ways. This paper also tries to offer a guideline about the odontological handling or management of healthy pregnant patients presenting the aforementioned systemic complications.
